We’re preparing for our short holiday this weekend. As I mentioned last week, my brother Ernie and his wife, Penny, have asked Dad to build them a two-seat glider swing, such has he used to build to sell a number of years ago. They offered to fly him in, but Dad would rather we drive and bring his own power tools.
So, I’ve figured Saturday for the 10 hour drive there, Sunday for church and visiting, and then Dad can build this swing over Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday we’ll be driving back.
Since I won’t have my computer along, I’m going to throw myself into a long-neglected hobby; sketching and art work! It always gets shoved to the back burner.
Our garden,
which is a whole lot behind the house, has been growing like crazy with all the rains of the last few weeks, but I guess it will be okay for five days. The raspberries will be ripe and ready for picking when we get back. The potatoes should be ready to sample this week yet!
The peonies along the east and south sides of the house are big and bold in their pinks, and the white daisies make even our humble home seem dainty and pretty.
I’m even going to have dahlias again this year! Several years ago, some friends gave us some roots of their deep pink dahlias. They multiplied and I gave some friends some of the roots for Christmas. But the second year, Dad made the mistake of putting our roots away in a plastic bag lined box. The grew mold and didn’t bear any plants at all.
This year, one of those friends, Kathy Wollf, called to say that her roots had multiplied nicely, and she would give me some back again. This morning I saw four plants are up by about five or six inches. They will grow four to five and six feet tall. Next year I’ll have about three or four times as many!
I guess the Bible is right when it says, what you give away will come back to you some day.
Unfortunately, there are others who tell us their gardens are under water. They won’t likely get much to harvest this year.
