Standin’ in the Need of a Friend

People who do not sense the need of a friend must be few and far between.

I’ll confess I had a lonely or solitary childhood even though surrounded by relatives most of the time. We had so many cousins to socialize with that when I said “I wish I could meet some new friends,” my mother said, “But we don’t get around to visit all your cousins, how would we fit in strangers?”

As a young girl I began to entertain friends in my imagination that continued like serial mysteries or eternal soap operas. When I read something or saw an interesting model in an ad, a new friend would appear and before long I knew this person’s whole life story.

At times I learned how to deal with my real life problems by how things worked out in these private friendships that only I could see or feel.

The sad, lonely times, and times of being misunderstood brought clearly into focus that I much longed for a perfect friend, and I was blessed, to know that Friend too. He was as close as my airy friends under my hair - or closer!

When major disappointments wiped me out, it was admitting to this one perfect Friend that I needed Him to hold me together, comfort and give me advice, that saved me from becoming a basket case in a Psych Ward, where some government employee could make a living carrying me around, or feeding me.

Do you also stand in the need of a good friend? Does your heart break over something that you cannot change? Have the ones that you pinned your hopes on undone all those pins and fled?

You felt like the ugly duckling with the wrong type of creatures. Maybe you too, had to grow up fast due to a parent’s illness, and take on adult responsibilities. I didn’t experience abuse, despite being misunderstood and expected to be an adult when it came to housework. However, you may have been abused and used horribly. You don’t find it hard at all to admit you’re standin’ in the need of a good friend, do you?
