Matt. 6:19-21 Your Cache of Treasures

Filed under: The Kingdom of Jesus — Ruth @ 9:16 am

You may have a music or jewelry box where you hide your most important things (although, those are only your tiny treasures). You may have a deposit box at your bank where you keep your will, financial securities, and really priceless things. I see some of my very best friends as treasures as well.

But where do you keep your spiritual treasures? Did you even know you have some? Or that you can?

Jesus advises in this passage, not to be concerned about earthly treasures, like clothes, which moths can eat through, or metal things like silver, gold, (or cars?) which can rust through and turn ugly and old, or things that thieves like to come steal from us. Instead, Jesus urges us to store up heavenly treasure, which can’t be moth-eaten, rusted, or stolen.

Now, can you tell what heavenly treasures would yours be? What can we send ahead to heaven but records of godly deeds done in Christ’s name? Or the names of people we have helped to understand that Jesus is their Saviour, and who have accepted Him and made Him Lord of their lives? Every time we are deliberately obedient to God’s Word counts too, I believe.

We do not earn Heaven on the merit of our good deeds, but once we are abiding in Christ, we will do good deeds as naturally as a grapevine bears grapes. It’s those deeds, done by the strength of Christ in us, that count with God. In another place in the Bible Jesus says that if we so much as give a cup of cold water to a thirsty person in His name, it will be rewarded in Heaven. It’s those little kindnesses that are done as until Him, which become our deposits in our account above. They do NOT earn our salvation, but they add to our Heavenly wealth after we are saved.

PRAYER: Father-God, help us to grasp this; we cannot purchase or earn anything from You. It’s crazy, how often we think it’s all up to us to do great big special things FOR You. In our own strength, no less! Oh Lord, help me - to worship You for Your awesome holiness and love, and to lay up treasure as You ask us to do.
