Matt. 6:22-23 The Light in Your Eyes
Jesus uses picture language again in these two verses to hide a profound truth. Can we discover it? In what ways is the eye like a lamp or light to the body?
When the eye sees something it usually understands or comprehends it. That is why we talk of insight into a matter, or getting light on a subject. When we have a spiritual insight, it gives our life, including our body, some light to live by. When Jesus talks of eyes here, He’s referring to spiritual eyes that see life or truth as God sees it.
When our spiritual insight is good, our body is full of light and understanding. If our spiritual eyes see nothing but darkness, we really won’t know what to do next, or where to turn in our daily decisions.
Jesus adds, “If then the light within you is in darkness, how great is that darkness!”
What can He mean but that when you have no light, no grasp of spiritual things at all, our lives are truly bewildered, unguided, and confused. We honestly don’t know what is right or wrong, or where we are headed. We grope spiritually, like a blind person trying to get his bearings.
Do you know whether you have spiritual eyes that give light or act as a lamp to the rest of you?
Jesus Christ is the Light of the World. To receive Him into your life, and to consult and obey His words and commands will give you spiritual insight and direction. The more experience you get obeying Him, the more insights you will gain.
PRAYER: Oh Lord Jesus, I want You to shine into my soul and life, and to fill me with spiritual understanding. Drive out all darkness, and fill me with Your wisdom and insight and truth. Then I shall have light in my body, and also outside of it, knowing and doing Your will, with rejoicing!
