Matthew 17:1-8 I See Only Jesus
Jesus took His three closest disciples with Him up on a high mountain for a special worship retreat. There they got to see Jesus glorified - the way He would look in Heaven. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes were white as light. Suddenly they saw Moses and Elijah there too, and they were in conversation with Jesus! That impressed the disciples all right!
Peter, who was never at a loss for words, even in a new experience like this, blurted out, “Hey, this is great! I’ll build a separate shelter or tabernacle for each of You, and we’ll just stay here forever!”
Before it was fully out of his mouth, a bright cloud enveloped the transfigured ones, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”
Well, that corrected Peter’s thinking, don’t you suppose? This passage reports that the disciples all fell face-down to the ground, absolutely terrified.
After a while, Jesus came and touched them and told them to get up, and not be afraid. When they looked around, they only saw Jesus, and He was as they knew Him before.
There’s more than one lesson in this passage, but I’m convicted today to focus my prayers and my spiritual intimacy more on Jesus. Didn’t God Himself just say to listen to Him? Maybe I need to do more listening than talking!
In the past that Jesus has encouraged me to share whatever is on my mind or heart. Telling Him everything is VERY therapeutic for me. I do sometimes pause to listen for answers He may be trying to give me to my barage of questions, but I see I need to do that much more, and to read the Word more, for there is where I find His thoughts on many topics that I can identify with.
PRAYER: Yes, Lord Jesus, I want my prayer trysts to be with YOU. I want to walk and talk with YOU, and to listen for what YOU want to say to me in Your Word.
