Use Your “Bcc” in Emails
It happened again this week. Someone wanted to send an email to a bunch of friends, and just kept adding emails in the to: blank without paying attention to the fact that they showed up as “Cc” which stands for Carbon Copy. Someone saw the list of emails in the copy they got, and got really angry at the reminder of someone they had divorced and wanted OUT of their life forever. Sparks flew.
So here’s my tip: same as you wouldn’t share your best friend’s phone number with strangers, don’t show off your friends’ email addresses to others who might know and hate them, or on the other hand, might want to approach and stalk them. The answer is to click on that To: button for each additional address you want to add, and choose “Bcc” on the drop down menu. That stands for Blind Carbon Copy. It means all these people will get a copy but each one - if you make the first one your own address - will not know who else got a copy.
Only use Cc when you need to let everyone on your list know which others have also received a copy. Your friends who “know this secret” will appreciate you for it.
